Let me begin by admitting I hardly ever use the visual editor in WordPress when creating my blog posts and pages. I prefer the HTML editor. With that being said, I do a lot of work for people who only use the visual editor on their sites. Often, I get asked how to make certain text a different color, or how to add a background color, or how to insert a page anchor. If this sounds like you, then you should absolutely take a look at the following plugin!
I wrote this plugin for those people who prefer using the visual editor. This plugin will add extreme formatting power and options to the buttons in the “Visual” mode when creating posts or pages.
Features ¦ Addons ¦ Donate ¦ Additional Resources ¦ Support Forum
Features:
- Included powerful upgrades to the image and link insertion buttons. Now you create mouseover and mouseout effects, and even add your own popup javascript windows when a user clicks a link.
- Now featuring Emoticons! Currently included are the default 16 wordpress emoticons, as well as 32 new emoticons… with many more on the way.
- Powerful editor buttons for font properties; now you can add your own custom CSS using drop-down menus. No need for mucking around in HTML.
- Cut, Copy, and Paste
- Inserting a Horizontal Ruler
- Choose a background color
- Choose a foreground color
- Insert page anchors
- Add and edit individual tables and their properties.
- Search and replace text.
- Too many features to list!
Do I really need another plugin?
If you use the visual editor to create all your fabulous content, and have longed for a way to extend it’s basic functionality… then the answer is Absolutely!
The filesize is extremely small; requires no additional javascript or jquery codes; and will run consistently on any theme out there.
Please feel free to comment on this page with questions, comments, or suggestions for future upgrades.
You may download this plugin from the WordPress Repository HERE.
Advanced Add-ons:
I also develop advanced add-ons designed to integrate with my Ultimate TinyMCE Plugin (although they do work individually as well). These add-ons will give you advanced control over certain features of the tinymce editor in WordPress.
Ultimate Tinymce Advanced Configuration
The tinymce editor for WordPress can be expanded and customized far beyond what’s available with the default installation. I have dedicated most of my time to working with the editor, and finding ways to improve it’s functionality. One problem I continuously encounter, is the settings for the editor… how do I know what each person will want?
This plugin will allow an advanced customization of the editor. It can be used with or without my Ultimate Tinymce plugin… although the customization options are GREATLY increased when using with Ultimate Tinymce.
Visit the Ultimate Tinymce Advanced Configuration plugin page for more information.
Ultimate Google Webfonts
This add-on will allow you to select any number of Google Webfonts from their website, and import them for use in your wordpress site. A truly “one-step” process to import any number of selected fonts. This plugin is better than any other out there because of these three reasons combined:
- It adds the font to the front end of your site.
- It adds the font in the editor window so you actually see what you get.
- It adds the name of the font, as well as a preview, in the font selector dropdown box.
You can find out more on the Ultimate Google Webfonts Plugin wesite.
Ultimate Custom Styles
This add-on will allow you to add predefined custom styles into the style select dropdown button in the visual editor. Your clients will love the ability to choose custom styles from a dropdown list, rather than mucking about in HTML and CSS.
- Custom Styles are applied to content in the visual editor.
- The Custom Styles are also applied to the front-end content.
- This plugin is bridging the gap for a true wysiwyg experience.
You can find out more on the Ultimate Custom Styles Plugin website.
Predefined Custom Styles
Here is an addon which requires no user input. Instead, this plugin will add over 80, that’s right (EIGHTY), predefined custom styles to the dropdown box.
- The custom styles are available via the styleselect dropdown box.
- Selected styles are immediately rendered on the editor box.
- Selected styles are also rendered identically on the front-end of the website.
- Bridging the gap to a true “what you see is what you get” experience.
You can find out more on the Ultimate Tinymce Predefined Styles website.
WP Admin Colors
This plugin will allow the user to choose from six unique stylesheets to apply to the admin dashboard. It was designed to extend the color selector in the tinymce editor area.
- Choose from the same six color schemes available in Ultimate Tinymce.
- Plans to add at least six more color options; for a total of twelve.
- Styles are rendered on every admin page, giving a truly unique viewing experience.
You can find out more on the WP Admin Colors website.
Additional Resources:
Max Foundry has written an amazing tutorial for adding Google Webfonts to other, “Custom”, instances of the TinyMCE editor. You can check his guide HERE.
Kenneth Odle has created a sample page showing some of the features of this plugin in action; his page can be found HERE.
Robert Reilly has shown us an excellent example using this plugins “page anchors” feature. Check out the webpage HERE. Note the floating div container on the right-hand side of your screen as you scroll down the page. Very cool!!
Support Forums:
My page and my inbox are beginning to get a lot of comments and help requests regarding this plugin. So, I have set up a support forum to help with this plugin, and also to help with wordpress in general. Please go check it out for additional help and resources:

Testimonials:
I spent all last night playing with your Tinymce plugin. What a joy! Boy, have I been doing things the hard way! I loved your tooltips for the different settings. Not only were they informative, but fun! You seemed like a real “person” – not a “manual” of difficult to understand techie language! Bravo for an awesome plugin – I will certainly share it with others! I only regret having worked so long without it!

Try using the Mozilla Firefox web browser.
The TinyMCE is buggy, at best, across browsers. I’ve found Firefox to be the most stable when working with all the advanced features.
You can download the free Firefox browser by clicking the link below:
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
Please let me know if this doesn’t work for you.

This is a wonderful plugin, thank you so much for writing it!
I’m a beginner with WordPress but (shoot me) I have taken it upon myself to build a website for an animal rescue shelter. I can’t donate money, but I can donate my time and wanted to help. As you can imagine, the ole’ biddies who run the shelter are thankful for an easy to use editor with buttons they recognise and aren’t scared of! Thank you so much.
I do have a teeny question though – I had manually inserted the below bit of code in the theme functions.php to allow shortcodes to work in widget text areas:
add_filter('widget_text', 'do_shortcode');If I tick the option in your editor called “Allow shortcode usage in widget text areas.” will this clash with my code in some way? I suppose I could try it and see…
Anyway, thanks so much for the brilliant plugin. All your plugins are coded so nicely, it’s an OCD girls dream!

Well Hello, Angel… (I do love the name!)
Actually, the line of code you wrote above is the same code I use in the plugin. I don’t think there will be any conflict if the filter is used twice. However, in my plugin, I also use
add_filter( 'widget_text', 'shortcode_unautop');,because it prevents the widget area from doing any funny wordpress formatting… just like the editor.
Let me know if you have any conflicts with this… as I’ll be curious.
And you’re OCD too??

Oh thanks for the reply!
Must remember to check back here manually, I was lazy and assumed an email would appear
That’s good to know. I’ve removed the code from my functions.php and ticked the box to enable the feature via your plugin (since it sounds vastly superior to my old hackity line). You might be interested to know, I ticked the box without removing my line first. Nothing blew up, so that’s always good.
PS: Totally! I’ve tossed out perfectly good plugins in the past for no other reason than the messy code gave me the creeps. Always makes me want to fix it…whereas your code gave warm fuzzies

A feature i would like to see:
When I switch from Visual to HTML, and vice versa, the system loses my place (cursor position). On switching it always starts off at the beginning of the page. So I have to search for the place again.
I hope this could be incorporated into your plugin.

Try uploading it directly to your website via FTP or your hosing Control Panel. Sometimes, your server might have a per-file upload limit.
So, extract the .zip to your desktop, copy the `ultimate-tinymce` folder to your `wp-content/plugins` directory.
After that, go to your admin, and you should see Ultimate Tinymce listed in your plugin menu. Simply click activate.

Hi Josh
Just a few things. First, your recent update solved the mood plugin issues. Thanks for all your hard work!. Secondly, I’m having a new problem. I have the WP Polls and NextGen Gallery plugins installed and these two plugin have automatically created their own buttons in the editor and have caused the top row of buttons to slide off the page, making the editor look pretty ugly and killing my scrollbars and there are no options in the two plugins I mentioned to disable the extra buttons from showing up. Is there any way to fix this?. Thanks again.

Hello,
Well, are there any buttons on the top row of the editor you wouldn’t mind removing?
We can write a function to remove some of the buttons, and insert the function into your child theme functions.php file. This would preserve the changes whenever you update your theme or wordpress installation.

Thanks for getting back to me Josh. Well yes, as a matter of fact there is a button I don’t really use that could be disabled/removed. The “toggle full screen” button in the very top bar. I’m not much of a programmer though so not sure how to add functions. Would I be able to do this in the code editor of your plugin?.
Josh
February 11, 2012 at 7:29 pm (UTC -4) Link to this comment
Would removing just that one button give you the room you need in the top row of the editor?
The function would need to be added to your child theme. If you have never heard of a child theme before, you might want to give the following link a look. Using a child theme preserves any changes during future updates. Otherwise, you would have to make the change each time you updated your theme or wordpress.

Thanks again for the reply. I’m still very new to WP and have spend a great deal of time both learning and trying to make the site perfect before launch. I really feel like (at least at the moment) this is a bit over my head so I’ll probably just live with it until there is a way to add/remove buttons from the first and second rows. To be honest, I just don’t want to take a chance and mess something up because of my lack of understanding about what I’m doing

Hi Josh, I love your plug in but I have one small problem and one question. Problem: On two occasions now I clicked on the default HTML tab of the edit window, did what ever it was I wanted to do, then clicked back on the visual tab. Both times It stayed stuck in the HTML mode rather than switching back. I had to deactivate the plugin to switch back to visual, then re-activate it. (using the HTML button provided by the plugin seems to work fine).
Question: How do you wrap text around an adsense ad in visual mode or HTML for that matter.? I can do pictures just fine, but have no clue on how to wrap around the ad’s.
Thanks in advance
Josh
February 11, 2012 at 6:50 pm (UTC -4) Link to this comment
Hi,
As far as the problem… this is a bug created when you have the “enable tinymce in excerpt” option checked. I would suggest unchecking this option until I have fixed the bug.
Regarding your question… you should be able to wrap your adsense code with a div and align it to the left or right, depending on how you want your text to be wrapped.
For example, add div align=”left” to the beginning of the adsense code, and add /div to the end of the code.

Hi there,
First, the “!” and “X” buttons are added by my theme. It is called Graphene… and is (imho) one of the best themes out there. Plus, it’s free!! The buttons you see are very similar to the “custom styles” button in the plugin.
For the moods addon, this is strange. I have it working properly on my three test sites, and it will adjust depending on if the moods addon is activated or not.
Once you activate the “Moods Addon”, the little message in the ultimate moods plugin should say “activated”. There is not an option for the moods… instead, it is installed as soon as it’s activated… and uninstalled when de-activated.
Is your WP install in your root folder, or is it in a subfolder?

Wow, thanks for the fast reply!.
My WP install is in the main/root folder. Interestingly, when I enabled “Enable Advanced Insert/Edit Link” in the settings and then clicked on the editor’s “kitchen sink” button, the moods appeared but so did a lot of extra buttons that caused one row to move off the screen.
The Graphene theme sounds good.
Was also wonder…I see in the settings that the 3′rd and 4′th menu bars can be edited. How does one edit the 1′st and 2′nd menu bars?.
Thanks again for the reply!.

Just wanted to also mention that when I leave the “Enable Advanced Insert/Edit Link” box in the settings unchecked and then click on the editor’s “kitchen sink” button, suddenly the moods are no longer there. Not sure if this helps but it seems that the moods are somehow dependant on having the “Enable Advanced Insert/Edit Link” box checked.

Thanks for noticing this. I’ll have to check my coding. It’s definitely possible I tied the moods button to the advanced insert/edit link button while writing the code. I’ll look into this.
I am currently working on a way to allow just that. It’s still in development phase though. It’s possible using some custom functions, but it can get complicated to explain over messages. Is there something in particular you were wanting to do?

Ok, thanks Josh. Appreciate your time. Looking forward to this being fixed in any new releases/updates that might come out with this issue fixed. Excellent plugin BTW. Just started using it not too long ago.
Nothing in particular that I can think of regarding the first 2 menus. I was just trying to shorten the top one as the buttons were “bleeding” over into the sidebar of my theme so I wanted to edit/remove a particular button.
Incidentally, I tried the theme you mentioned. Really nice. Gonna take awhile to get my head wrapped around all the features and gadgets that thing has. Whew!

Gotcha. Well, if you have a particular button or two you would like to remove, just tell me the buttons and I’ll see what I can do to write a custom function for you which you can throw in your child theme.
I have fixed the issue with the smilies, and this will be available in version 1.7.1 of the plugin.

Hi there!.
I just wanted to say that I installed WP (single-user) v3.3.1 the other day and downloaded your Ultimate TinyMCE plugin and just loved it. However, a few days later, an update came out and the animated mood smiles disappeared, replaced by a seperate plugin.
I have tried installing the mood smiles a number of times via the WP installer, installed them manually, activated everything and I still get the little box that tells me that the moods are not activated (even though they are). I’ve looked through the settings over and over again and the moods are no where to be found so there is no box to check.
I’ve also tried deactivating both of these plugins and reactivating them again, deleting and reinstalling them in different orders, disabling other plugins, etc, and I always get that box that tells me that they have not been activated.
What am I doing wrong please – or is this just a bug?.
Thank you for your time.

Yes, you will need to insert an image first, and then click the image in the visual editor, and then the image map button will be active.

I installed the plugin back in December. It made it impossible to edit. There was the edit box. It had an insert button above left. It had an HTML button above right. Next to that button was a faded button for visual.
Clicking on visual didn’t work. Clicking to insert a graphic appeared to work but nothing showed up in the edit box. I was able to type in text but it disappeared when I tried to save.
The tech at the host erased the folders for all plugins. It was still broken. He discovered that going to user and disabling the visual editor permitted using the HTML editing. That is where I am now and I’m lousy at HTML.
I just reinstalled the plugin. It’s the same.

Hum, I was checking and the bug seems to be in some functionality of the second row of buttons, on “styles” one. I’m testing one by one and I think I found the error.
But I’d like to ask why is this happening and if is it any way to fix that?
Thank you.

Hi Diego,
Sorry for the delay. Okay, have you checked your plugins? Apparently, one of them is altering the functionality of the “styles” button, maybe adding some custom styles or something?
Have you determined which plugin is causing the conflict? If so, let me know which one and I’ll download it to see if I can find a workaround.
Alternatively, go to the admin menu and make sure the “advanced styles” is unchecked under the “advanced options and features” section. Also, make sure the “styles” button is unchecked from row 4 of the editor.
Let me know how this works out for you.

Hi! So I am new to word press and am trying to figure things out on my own without bombarding my oversees designer. Any way, I downloaded and activated the plugin. Then went to settings and clicked everything I wanted, and saved settings.
The text editor isn’t showing up at the top part of my pages to edit. Is there a code I need to insert any where?
Like I said, day 2 on word press
Thanks so much!

Hello Brittany,
Thanks for installing my plugin. Let’s see if we can get it working properly for you.
1. When you edit a post… there are two tabs. The “Visual” tab and the “HTML” tab. Make sure you are in the Visual Tab.
2. There is a button in row 1 of the visual tab called “show/hide kitchen sink”. This button “shows” the additional formating rows. Make sure it is set to “show”.
3. If the two above don’t work… I’m thinking it could be a plugin conflict. Could you list your other plugins here for me to view?
