Let me begin by admitting I hardly ever use the visual editor in WordPress when creating my blog posts and pages. I prefer the HTML editor. With that being said, I do a lot of work for people who only use the visual editor on their sites. Often, I get asked how to make certain text a different color, or how to add a background color, or how to insert a page anchor. If this sounds like you, then you should absolutely take a look at the following plugin!
I wrote this plugin for those people who prefer using the visual editor. This plugin will add extreme formatting power and options to the buttons in the “Visual” mode when creating posts or pages.
Features ¦ Addons ¦ Donate ¦ Additional Resources ¦ Support Forum
Features:
- Included powerful upgrades to the image and link insertion buttons. Now you create mouseover and mouseout effects, and even add your own popup javascript windows when a user clicks a link.
- Now featuring Emoticons! Currently included are the default 16 wordpress emoticons, as well as 32 new emoticons… with many more on the way.
- Powerful editor buttons for font properties; now you can add your own custom CSS using drop-down menus. No need for mucking around in HTML.
- Cut, Copy, and Paste
- Inserting a Horizontal Ruler
- Choose a background color
- Choose a foreground color
- Insert page anchors
- Add and edit individual tables and their properties.
- Search and replace text.
- Too many features to list!
Do I really need another plugin?
If you use the visual editor to create all your fabulous content, and have longed for a way to extend it’s basic functionality… then the answer is Absolutely!
The filesize is extremely small; requires no additional javascript or jquery codes; and will run consistently on any theme out there.
Please feel free to comment on this page with questions, comments, or suggestions for future upgrades.
You may download this plugin from the WordPress Repository HERE.
Advanced Add-ons:
I also develop advanced add-ons designed to integrate with my Ultimate TinyMCE Plugin (although they do work individually as well). These add-ons will give you advanced control over certain features of the tinymce editor in WordPress.
Ultimate Tinymce Advanced Configuration
The tinymce editor for WordPress can be expanded and customized far beyond what’s available with the default installation. I have dedicated most of my time to working with the editor, and finding ways to improve it’s functionality. One problem I continuously encounter, is the settings for the editor… how do I know what each person will want?
This plugin will allow an advanced customization of the editor. It can be used with or without my Ultimate Tinymce plugin… although the customization options are GREATLY increased when using with Ultimate Tinymce.
Visit the Ultimate Tinymce Advanced Configuration plugin page for more information.
Ultimate Google Webfonts
This add-on will allow you to select any number of Google Webfonts from their website, and import them for use in your wordpress site. A truly “one-step” process to import any number of selected fonts. This plugin is better than any other out there because of these three reasons combined:
- It adds the font to the front end of your site.
- It adds the font in the editor window so you actually see what you get.
- It adds the name of the font, as well as a preview, in the font selector dropdown box.
You can find out more on the Ultimate Google Webfonts Plugin wesite.
Ultimate Custom Styles
This add-on will allow you to add predefined custom styles into the style select dropdown button in the visual editor. Your clients will love the ability to choose custom styles from a dropdown list, rather than mucking about in HTML and CSS.
- Custom Styles are applied to content in the visual editor.
- The Custom Styles are also applied to the front-end content.
- This plugin is bridging the gap for a true wysiwyg experience.
You can find out more on the Ultimate Custom Styles Plugin website.
Predefined Custom Styles
Here is an addon which requires no user input. Instead, this plugin will add over 80, that’s right (EIGHTY), predefined custom styles to the dropdown box.
- The custom styles are available via the styleselect dropdown box.
- Selected styles are immediately rendered on the editor box.
- Selected styles are also rendered identically on the front-end of the website.
- Bridging the gap to a true “what you see is what you get” experience.
You can find out more on the Ultimate Tinymce Predefined Styles website.
WP Admin Colors
This plugin will allow the user to choose from six unique stylesheets to apply to the admin dashboard. It was designed to extend the color selector in the tinymce editor area.
- Choose from the same six color schemes available in Ultimate Tinymce.
- Plans to add at least six more color options; for a total of twelve.
- Styles are rendered on every admin page, giving a truly unique viewing experience.
You can find out more on the WP Admin Colors website.
Additional Resources:
Max Foundry has written an amazing tutorial for adding Google Webfonts to other, “Custom”, instances of the TinyMCE editor. You can check his guide HERE.
Kenneth Odle has created a sample page showing some of the features of this plugin in action; his page can be found HERE.
Robert Reilly has shown us an excellent example using this plugins “page anchors” feature. Check out the webpage HERE. Note the floating div container on the right-hand side of your screen as you scroll down the page. Very cool!!
Support Forums:
My page and my inbox are beginning to get a lot of comments and help requests regarding this plugin. So, I have set up a support forum to help with this plugin, and also to help with wordpress in general. Please go check it out for additional help and resources:

Testimonials:
I spent all last night playing with your Tinymce plugin. What a joy! Boy, have I been doing things the hard way! I loved your tooltips for the different settings. Not only were they informative, but fun! You seemed like a real “person” – not a “manual” of difficult to understand techie language! Bravo for an awesome plugin – I will certainly share it with others! I only regret having worked so long without it!

Hey Josh-
Nice to meet you. I’m a web developer and online consultant. Ultimate tinymce is one of the default plugins I always install on every site I build.
As of the most recent update, I’m getting some funky display issues in the post/page editor portion. The buttons are all inline, and overflowing outside of the editor box.
Any idea what’s going on?
Thanks,
Johnny

I see now you added the option for us to place the buttons on whichever row we wish…DUH

Haha… I loved that skit!!
Well, it’s partly my fault. I should have designed a better “transitional” phase of the redesign. But, if you really wanna blow your mind, you can take a sneak peek at what I’m working on (with excellent help from a Brazilian amigo) for the new interface.

I have been looking for ways to edit my post without having to jump to code all the time to get what I want, I am happy I found your plugin, it is just what I needed to save time.
Thank you

Thanks Mike. Have you noticed the “Html code magic” button? It allows a popup window which will give your code proper spacing for editing, syntax coloring, and line numbers. Select it from the admin panel settings page, and click it when you have a post/page with code. You’ll LOVE it!!

Hi Josh. Congratulations for your plugin, i find it very useful. I´m using the tables feature, and i want to know if i can create a table with shadow, and if i can select a text, then create a table and the text goes automatically inside the table, like a johnson box, you understand me?. Sorry for my english, i know that i need some lessons. Thanx in advance. Best regards.

Hello Quim,
Unfortunately, my plugin does not currently support importing table data. The table editor in tinymce is quite buggy, and sometimes simply getting a table to behave properly can be a challenge. Of course, as you play around with the table feature, you will learn more about it and maybe learn a few “loopholes”. If you do, please feel free to share them here for others to see.

I just applied version 1.7.5 and now all the buttons appear in one long line wrapped at the end of the screen. Previously they appeared on more than one line.
Any ideas?
Thanks very much,

It shouldn’t matter. What you need to do is go to the admin settings page for Ultimate Tinymce, and on each button you are enabling, you can also set which row in the editor the button will appear. Select the row from the dropdown box in the settings page. You might need to refresh your browser after changing the selection.

Hi, I see the row assignment for each button. I have done that, but now I don’t have a second row showing up in the editor. Anything I put on row two goes away on the page. thank for your help, I really like having the plugin but I need my second row!

Hi Ron,
Scroll across each button in the top row until you see the tooltip that says “Show/Hide kitchen sink”. When you see that, click the button. This should open up the second row of the editor.

Where can I get the prior version to Version 1.7.5 ?

You can get other versions here:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ultimate-tinymce/download/
However, the solution is assigning each button to a row. It is intended to give you added flexibility of how your buttons appear in your editor. Also, the plugin is much more secure now with the new javascript and jquery admin enhancements. I would suggest staying current with the plugin, and learning the new options.

You can send me your login info and I’ll take a look. 99% of the time, it is a plugin or theme conflict. The best steps are to temporarily deactivate all plugins (except Ultimate Tinymce); then try switching to the default twentyeleven theme. Refresh your site and browser, and see if the problem persists.

Where can I find the code for these additions? I’ve actually already added some additional styling elements to my tinymce editor, but I added the code to my functions.php file, instead of using a plugin (I really hate how a large numner of plugin developers abandon their plugins over time which renders the plugin useless after WordPress updates). I would rather add the codes to my functions.php file.
Josh
March 20, 2012 at 4:20 pm (UTC -4) Link to this comment
Hi Liza,
What codes exactly are you talking about? The plugin code is all in the main.php file. This plugin is extremely complex and detailed… and I’m not sure it’s something you can easily replicate in your functions.php file.

Okay, well this is most definitely because of a plugin conflict. If you would like to use my contact form (top of this site), you can send me a temp admin level username and password, and I’ll take a quick look at it for you. There is no reason why it shouldn’t be working, other than a plugin conflict… or possibly a conflict with your theme.

Hey, Josh, with Ultimate TinyMCE, can I save the settings so if I install the plugin on a number of our sites, I can just transfer the saved settings across per site?
Let me know soon. Thanks, mate.
PS I see you’re making very good use of Syahir’s Graphene theme here too. Well done!
Josh
March 19, 2012 at 7:20 am (UTC -4) Link to this comment
Yes, Syahir is quite the developer. I’m grateful to have become a part of his team.
As far as the plugin, I don’t currently have an option to support this request. However, you are not the first to mention such a feature. So, I’ll design something which will allow you to both export and import settings via a text file or something. I’ll have to do a little research and experimentation… so it might take a few weeks before it is released in an update.
In the meantime (if you are database savvy), you can always export the particular table entries in the “wp-options” list. Every one of my options will begin with a “jwl_” prefix. Then, in your other databases, you could import the file.
I’ll work on a way to automate this procedure, as outlined above.

G’day again Josh, 1st chance to get back to you. Thanks for reply & considering my ‘saved settings’ request. Shall keep an eye out for it.
A little while ago, I tried TinyMCE Advanced which is quite usable but yours is som much nicer again to use. I’ll swap our sites over to Ultimate TMCE when you get around to adding Export/Import Settings functionality.
And thanks for the database table suggestion, but prefer not to fiddle with extra bits; my productivity goes down enough as it is when I visit Support Forums. Always getting into trouble from She Who Must Be Obeyed & Paid, haha!

Well, I don’t currently have a “better half” to keep me focused and on track. So, it’s not always a bad thing to have someone around to keep you in check
If you liked the drag-n-drop feature of tinymce advanced… you’re gonna LOVE what I’ve got in store for Ultimate Tinymce. Check this link for a sneak peek… http://elblawg.com/dragdrop
The export/import options feature is going to be a bit more complicated than I originally anticipated. Realistically, it’s going to be a few weeks before it will be operational. But, it’s currently number three on my list of “to-do’s” (which is pretty high up there).

I have a website with a dark background and light text, I cannot see the text when adding it to the editor in wordpress. will this allow me to change the editor background but not change the background that is in my settings for my site (I use headway themes)?
Josh
March 15, 2012 at 8:44 pm (UTC -4) Link to this comment
Hi Sandy,
This is the first I’ve heard of this situation. Are you using white text on your website? This is interesting because I always thought the editor showed a white background with black text… regardless of the setting on the front end of the website.
Ummm… let me work on a custom function which will allow you to set the background color of the tinymce editor. If you are not using a child theme, the function will need to be placed in your themes functions.php file… which will be overwritten whenever you update the theme.. so you would need to insert the function each time you update your theme. Which is why we use a child theme (to preserve the changes).
If I wrote the function, would you know what to do with it?
Sandy
March 15, 2012 at 11:06 pm (UTC -4) Link to this comment
I a using headway themes and their child themes. Headway allows the site editor to change the text style, size, etc. So all I need is for the add page editor in wordpress to be dark background makes it easy for adding text etc. I can do html but it takes me alot longer.
I did a screen capture video so you could see what I am talking about I hope it helps. here is the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLoj86ECXEM&feature=youtu.be
I have some css skills, so if all I needed to do was add the function to the php or css in my childs themes for headway I think I can handle it.

Okay, let’s try the easy route first. Try adding this to your custom css:
.wp-editor-container {
background-color: #FF0000 !important;
}
Change the hex color (#FF0000) to whatever color you would like. Please let me know if this works for you.

Hello Josh, thank you for creating such a wonderful plug in. It has made my life so much easier. I read all these comments and couldn’t find the answer to my question. I have this plugin installed on practically all of my many wordpress sites and I LOVE it. However, I have installed it on my latest site that I am currently building and I can not get it to work. I have uninstalled, deleted, reinstalled an to no avail.
The action I am taking is on the creation of a page I am highlighting some text and trying to change the color and each time I Press the color change button, it gives me this message.
“Not Found
The requested URL /proddetail.php was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Apache Server at big-mable.com Port 80″
What in the world does this mean and can I do anything to get my favorite plug in to work? It is a wordpress using the twenty ten theme. Really not much different than all my other sites, except I have used a lot of other themes with it without a problem.
Thank you so much for your help

I just wanted to let you know all is well now. Even though the plugin worked just fine in all my other blogs, I have a dozen so far. It would NOT work on my newest one. So I just used the old fashioned time consuming html to get the effect I was going for. And then today I wanted to make a change and just out of habit I used my TinyMCE and viola, it worked just fine. I have no explanation. Nothing was different. It just worked. Which was so thrilling and EASY!! Thank you for this amazing plugin, even this little delay was worth it. I highly recommend it to anyone.

Hello Giacinto,
Are you wanting to disable another plugin from adding a button alltogether? Or are you wanting to disable certain buttons for certain members who will be posting?
If it is the latter, I’m afraid I’m not sure how to do this. I’ll have to dig into wordpress and see if the editor is given a unique ID for each member (which I doubt), so this will take some database customization.
However, if you are wanting to simply disable another plugin inserting a button into the editor, I’m sure this can be accomplished fairly easily (by editing the code of the plugin).
Which plugin were you questioning about? And I’ll download it and take a look.

Hello Josh, thanks for your reply!.
In fact, I would like to keep active only for me the buttons added by other plugins on your editor, but I wish they would not be visible to all other users (Author).
To better make sense of my request, I cite for example the button added by the plugin WP-FAQ.

Okay, I’m with you.
I’ll have to check into this and see if we could set up a conditional to check whether the user is the admin user or not. I’m pretty sure the admin user ID should be 1. So, we would need to write a few custom functions to make this determination prior to showing the button in the editor.
The only limitation I can think of is that each time the plugin is updated (the ones where we remove the buttons), you would need to go back and make the changes again.
Use my contact form to shoot me a personal email… and we can continue the conversation easier.

I have a troubleshooting problem I need some help with.
Whenever I install and activate the Ultimate TinyMCE plug-in it performs very well.
However, it causes the WordPress SEO by Yoast pane to stop toggling when I am using the editor to compose a post or page.
The only other plug-in that I have installed that has anything to do with the tinymce is the TinyMCE Advanced plug-in.
I am using the iFeature4 theme by CyberChimps as my site theme, if it matters.
If you can tell me how to get the two plugins to live in harmony on my site please let me know the fix.

Agreed!!
It’s currently in the development stage. I had to bring in an expert to help with the custom jquery and javascript codes… but I’m really looking forward to this feature.
The only trouble I see with this option is this: Any plugins adding a custom button, you will have no control over. It’s absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to code my plugin to be compatible with the thousands of other plugins adding buttons here and there.
So, buttons added by other plugins will still be available (and operational), however you won’t have any control over where those buttons are placed.. unless you modify their core code.
But, my plugin adds about 35 new buttons to the editor; so it will be nice to have the ability to move those around as you see fit.
