Video Tutorial: Using Action Hooks in Graphene (Simple)

WordPress GrapheneThis is the third tutorial for using Graphene with WordPress. I am using WordPress version 3.2.1 along with Graphene version 1.5.2. In this video, I will show you step-by-step how to use an action hook for inserting your custom content.

Note: This method is one I just picked up on a few days ago. I will refer to this as the simple method. There is a more advanced method which will give you further customization abilities. However, if you’re looking for a simple solution, this might work for you. I will make a new tutorial for the advanced version soon.

In this tutorial, you will learn how to:

  • Use Graphene admin panel to activate action hooks.
  • Use a “widgetized” area to add your custom code into the WordPress script.
  • Learn to use pre-existing widgets, or create your own custom content.

Please feel free to leave any feedback, advice, constructive criticism, or just say Hi.

    hello Josh,

I just found the theme Graphene while I was looking for a theme for my wp website, I really like what you guys are doing, this is definitely not just a theme, but a great WP community, please keep up the great work!

I wonder if you can help me in this, I need to make a marquee bar under the header that will show last 10 posts in some category! Is there any snippet for that?

    Thanks!

      Hello Ali,

Thanks for all the kind words. Well, the first thing you will need to do (if you haven’t already) is familiarize yourself with how the graphene action hooks work. I have a video on my site which walks you through an example; just look under “Graphene” from my main menu.

The second obstacle is finding a snippet for looping the latest 10 posts. However, you can also use a plugin which allows a shortcode, and insert the shortcode in your action hook.

So, go ahead and set up the action hook where you want it. Then, find a plugin which will produce a shortcode for showing the latest 10 posts, and finally insert a text widget (in your newly created action hook area) and use the shortcode in the text widget.

Please let me know if you get stuck along the way, and I’ll be happy to help.

Its like you opened up a whole new world for me with this theme. Probably could have saved about 8 hours if I had come here first instead of fumbling around with trial and error. LOL!
